Germany Literary Agencies

Germany has always played a significant role in world literature through its rich heritage of writers across all mediums.

Hence why it has been known throughout history as Das Land Der Dichter und Denker – the land of poets and thinkers.

This influence extends within its own borders with universities still thriving since their establishment in the 14th century. Generations steeped in literature has enabled Germany to remain one of the world’s leading countries for literacy rates: 99% for everyone over 15-years-old.

Consequently, the demand for books is huge, and with 700 million German titles published every year by over 2000 publishers, only English and Chinese titles see more releases.

But no matter what language the original text is written in, they all come together in 4 million square-feet of indoor space to seek international sales: The Frankfurt Book Fair. The world’s largest trade book fair has a history dating back over 500 years, and today is visited by over 300,000 industry professionals and readers. The latter of whom are given access to the events during the final two days, something which many of the large book fairs still do not grant. But at its core, Frankfurt exists for trade publishing, and as a result many of the literary agencies throughout Germany only represent subsidiary rights and do not accept unsolicited queries.

All of their city and state locations are also mentioned to further help writers gain an understanding of how Germany differs from other countries, in that the agencies are not predominately concentrated in one city.
